Stump grinding vs. excavation

In most cases, stump grinding is the better choice when you want a stump removed.

While excavation totally removes the root structure, it is often costly and time consuming, as it requires a lot of labour and machinery to dig the roots out.

Stump grinding, on the other hand, removes the visible part of the stump to below ground level, reducing the wood to chips that can later be used as mulch for filling in the resulting hole.
